Last fall (2020), the K-1 Crew students at Wellspring Catholic Academy located in Lakewood,Colorado embarked on an “expedition” to learn about trees.
As part of the program, students researched the trees in their community and trees native to Colorado, where the school is located. They also researched how important trees are to all life and how they are necessary for the Earth.
“We were fortunate to have a Zoom call with Dr. Meg Lowman, executive director of the TREE Foundation,” said K-1 teacher Ellen Kail. “The students were very interested in the TREE Foundation’s Church Forests of Ethiopia project and wanted to help.”
Guided by their dedicated art teacher, the young students at Wellspring brainstormed ideas to help and eventually settled on the idea of creating greeting cards inspired by trees, selling those cards in their community, and then donating the funds to support the TREE Foundation’s mission in Ethiopia.
Dr. Lowman’s presentation not only educated the students but inspired them to take action, according to Ellen: “Wellspring students will never look at a tree the same again!”
The TREE Foundation and Meg thank Wellspring Catholic Academy for inviting Meg into their classroom and allowing her the opportunity to share her love for trees with students. The cards look beautiful and the effort to support the Church Forests of Ethiopia is so very much appreciated!
