In June, Brazil President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva spoke at the international event Global Citizen’s Power Our Planet (held in Paris). He spoke passionately about his goal as president to stop — full stop! — deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest by 2030. Such an ambitious — and 100% necessary — goal!
Some of his bold remarks included:
The Amazon “… belongs to all humanity.”
“Brazil will once again become a global reference in sustainability, tackling climate change, and achieving targets for carbon emission reduction and zero deforestation.”
“We will be relentless against any group or person that wants to cut down one tree … .”
The Amazon corridor and forests are home to hundreds of Indigenous communities, and the rainforests are quite rightly referred to as the “lungs of the Earth” — they are literally keeping our planet alive by processing the very air we breathe.
